Há um ranking novíssimo das cidades mais violentas do mundo de Conselho dos Cidadãos do México para Segurança Pública e Justiça Criminal. Um total de um terço dos homicídios ocorrem na América Latina, embora a região tenha apenas 8% da população do mundo, de acordo com dados da ONU . O tráfico de drogas, guerras entre gangues, instabilidade política, corrupção e pobreza contribuem para a violência elevada da região.
